DIY Faux Wedding Cake

I know for some of you its still a little early to be thinking about Halloween, but I wanted to share an early DIY just in case you need time to make one of your own.

Halloween is a big deal at our house every year. Around July I start thinking about themes and how I plan to deck out our historical home for the season. I try to do something a bit different each year to change things up, but still not break the bank.

This year at Welch House there will be a spooky wedding reception taking place in the dining room, and of course that calls for a wedding cake. We may even see the "jilted bride" roaming about.

I wanted to created a gorgeous, elegant yet creepy cake for my "jilted bride" and not spend a ton of money or have to actually bake a real one!

I started off  by finding three different sizes of round hat boxes at the thrift store for five dollars. This is going to be my "cake". To start off,  I hot glued each box one on top of the other.

Next I went hunting through my kitchen cabinets to find a cake stand. I chose this hobnail black stand since it is a going to be a  Halloween prop and we are wanting things a bit spooky. I put tinfoil down around the bottom of my "cake" so that after I ice it I can just pull the tinfoil out with no mess.

The next item that you will need is the "icing". For this I went upstairs to the bathroom that we are working on, and scooped out a bowlful of lightweight joint compound from its bucket. Now this is important, if you are wanting to make your cake to set out all year long and look pretty, you need to use all-purpose joint compound. I chose to use the light weight compound because we already had it.  As it dries it forms cracks, which is the look that I was going for. My wedding cake is supposed to appear as though its been sitting around for ages. Also I have heard that you can also buy small buckets of it at the Dollar Tree.

To ice the cake was simple! I used a regular butter knife and just fluffed and swirled the mud into soft peaks. The joint compound texture was exactly like icing.

For the cake topper you can get really creative and do just about anything, faux flowers, ravens, skeleton couple..ect. I decided to use a vintage topper that I found thrifting a few months ago. It features two doves, vintage flowers and even a set of fake bridal rings! I love it so much!

I love the simplicity of my wedding cake, but you could make it much much more fancy. I decided to add a very subtle line of pearls around the bottom of each layer.

After a few hours my icing began to crack which just enhances the spooky vibe. After it dried, I perched a few black spider rings on my cake.

I absolutely love how it turned out, and it was super easy! Anyone can do it! This whole cake was well under ten dollars for me to make, which is a total win in my book!

I hope our "bride" approves. You will be seeing more of her in the upcoming weeks.

If you decide to create your own faux cake I would love to see it! My Instagram is @larissa_jenkins you can always tag me on there and I will feature you in my stories! I love seeing all of your creations!

  6. But a man needs to approach his wedding ring quite differently, hence the popularity of diamond mens rings. Mens diamond wedding rings are larger and more noticeable than womens rings. And as there is no engagement ring, the diamonds go on his wedding ring. Scottsdale diamonds
